Parfums Bryenne

Bryenne of Paris France, established in 1911 by Jacques Brach. The perfumes were imported into the USA by sole agents the Lionel Trading Co.

The perfumes of Bryenne:
  • 1911 L'Heure Exquise (still sold in 1928)
  • 1918 Chu Chin Chow (still sold in 1928)
  • 1920 Le Lilas
  • 1927 Mabrouka (still sold in 1928)
  • 1927 Sentimental (still sold in 1928)
  • 1927 Ambre Persan (still sold in 1928)
  • 1928 Fascination
  • 1929 Brenny

Chu Chin Chow:

Bryenne's most popular fragrance was the Chinese themed "Chu Chin Chow", a perfume based on the 1916 play of the same name by Oscar Asche, an elaborate spectacle, with its fairy-tale plot, its Oriental splendor and its scantily clad and writhing dancing girls. The luxury edition bottle was manufactured by Verreries Brosse and handpainted by GK Benda, the presentation box is shaped like an ornate pagoda.

The more rarer purse flacon is made up of clear glass, with embossed paper label, painted metal head, leather cover painted as the Chu Chin Chow character with fan. 2 1/4 in." tall.

"Another popular package put out by the Lionel Trading Co., Inc. is the Chu-Chin-Chow Bryenne, a hand- painted bottle, the head in heavy gold leaf, the body in beautiful Oriental colors, and is all the vogue this season." - The Pharmaceutical Era, 1924

Fascination:

An extremely rare presentation of Fascination by Bryenne from 1928, a round glass bottle molded with a snake wrapped around it, the stopper is in the shape of a woman's head. The bottom part of the bottle is painted with "Fascination Bryenne" in gilded enamel. Height of the flacon : 80 mm. Height of the box: 90 mm.

The flacon is a literal representation of Eve as the stopper and the seductive snake, with the bottle being the original  forbidden fruit, the base of the bottle is molded to resemble the bottom of an apple. The box hearkens the design of the snake amongst the tree of knowledge in a most beautiful way in the Art Deco style.

Mabrouka debuted in 1927. It was housed inside of an earthenware bottle shaped like a jug with four handles at the top, it had handpainted designs and the base was embossed with "Mabrouka - Bryenne".It is missing its blue porcelain stopper.

Welcome!

This is not your average perfume blog. In each post, I present perfumes or companies as encyclopedic entries with as much facts and photos as I can add for easy reading and researching without all the extraneous fluff or puffery.

Please understand that this website is not affiliated with any of the perfume companies written about here, it is only a source of reference. I consider it a repository of vital information for collectors and those who have enjoyed the classic fragrances of days gone by. Updates to posts are conducted whenever I find new information to add or to correct any errors.

One of the goals of this website is to show the present owners of the various perfumes and cologne brands that are featured here how much we miss the discontinued classics and hopefully, if they see that there is enough interest and demand, they will bring back these fragrances!

Please leave a comment below (for example: of why you liked the fragrance, describe the scent, time period or age you wore it, who gave it to you or what occasion, any specific memories, what it reminded you of, maybe a relative wore it, or you remembered seeing the bottle on their vanity table, did you like the bottle design), who knows, perhaps someone from the company brand might see it.

Also, if you have any information not seen here, please comment and share with all of us.
